A Word About Marketing and Promotion
Marketing and self-promotion aren’t necessarily things that we as writers are good at. After all, we just want to write the stories and books that we love and damn the world to Hell if they don’t love us.
Wrong attitude.
Authors are, at heart, egomaniacs. We are driven not only by the desire to write, but for the world to recognize our genius. We crave popularity and acceptance of our talents. While simply getting the words down on paper is indeed satisfying, it doesn’t fulfill that deeper need for recognition.
Ergo, we must market. Ourselves, our stories, our thoughts and opinions – all of it. If we want people to read what we have written and published, we must market a package to the audience that convinces them to read and/or buy what we have put out there in the world. If no one reads our story, does it really exist? It’s that same existential question about trees falling in the forest.
In future posts, I will work to pound this attitude into your heads. I will give you tips and must-dos for marketing yourself and your products. I will tell give you a million little reasons why this is necessary and how it is essential to your life as a writer.
The Wordsmith – Chuck Waldron – will most definitely agree with me on this. He has lately come to this realization and run with it faster than I can keep up. He has far outpaced me on the marketing frontier, much to my own shame. The great thing about Chuck is that his door is always open and he offers some of the best free advice you can get. He practices what he preaches, and he takes risks many of us fear – with success.
